After your intercontinental flight, we will welcome you at Male Airport and escort you to our seaplane’s private lounge, where you can freshen up before flying on to Finolhu in just 30 minutes on a Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane. WE PROTECT OUR HABITAT
Marine environmental activities
We see ourselves as guardians of the sea and protect what we live on. Under the guidance of our experienced marine biologist Ivanna Tobar we have created a coral protection programme. We aim to restore and sustain the reefs in a healthy and flourishing environment by planting new corals in a breeding station; when the fragments have grown large enough we transplant them to coral trees 15 metres deep at the edge of the house reef. Guests are welcome to participate in the breeding process and also to sponsor a coral tree, 57 of which have been placed since 2022.
– and once the fragments have grown – thanks to sunlight and currents – and are large enough, they are transplanted onto coral trees at a depth of 15 metres on the edge of the house reef. Guests can get involved in the cultivation process and sponsor a coral tree. Since 2022, 57 of these coral trees have already been planted.
SUSTAINABILITY
Biocomposting and solar energy
Finolhu is a small paradise that needs to be protected. We separate, recycle and reuse waste, with our large biocomposting facility playing an important part in the nutrient cycle. We use the resulting fertiliser in our kitchen gardens and for the tropical island greenery.
The sun shines all year on our island (well, maybe only 364 days), and we use it to generate electricity. With our new solar panels, we can already supply the entire staffing areas with electricity, reducing energy consumption by a good 30 per cent.
GREEN FUTURE
Natural cycles and reusable materials
How do we preserve what sustains us? What protection does our island need in the long term? We are constantly addressing these questions and pursuing a sustainable approach, and we are proud to have already developed and implemented many sustainability measures.
- We obtain water from our seawater desalination plant. This state-of-the-art technology converts salt water into drinking water.
- Our bottling plant reduces plastic waste by providing water in clean and reusable glass bottles.
- There is no single-use plastic on our island. We encourage our guests not to bring plastic bottles with them. If we do find any, we send them to the non-profit organisation Parley.
- We use a state-of-the-art heat exchanger to heat water, allowing us to save up to 12 per cent energy.
- Our wastewater is treated with a modern system and then used to irrigate our gardens.
